Patriotism is Getting Harder to Find

Having given out flags for many years now,  it feels odd to get a negative response from a teacher or just as bad, no response at all, when contacting them about setting up a time to talk about the flag and give them to the students as I have in past years. Growing up in the fifties honoring the flag was an automatic thing. We did it in school. We did it at Cub Scout and Boy Scout meetings. It all seemed so natural to honor the flag of the country you love and appreciate so much. That was then and this is now. My list of schools has dwindled, but the ones I go to are so rewarding. The looks on the faces of the youngsters when they say the “Pledge” and especially when they take the small flags into their hands is well worth the effort. My first school this year was Howard Elementary. The teachers as well as the students were enthusiastic and warmly welcomed my words about the history and importance of “Old Glory” to our founders and those of us who have followed after them.

One of my greatest joys was to be a part of “Patriotic Day” that was held at O’Hara Catholic School in Eugene ( this year on Tuesday May 27th). The whole student body gets flags (over 500) provided by the Eugene Downtown Lions Club and in turn all Lions. It gives me the hope that I will be able to get the more reluctant teachers on my list to allow me to bring flags and the love of this country back into their classrooms next year.
